Pushing Forward: Finding Strength in the Storm

3–5 minutes

Life has a way of throwing curveballs that test our resolve, but I’ve learned that pushing forward isn’t about denying the pain—it’s about embracing hope amid the chaos. As I navigate my Stage IV breast cancer diagnosis, every movement sends waves of excruciating pain through my body. Adding to this burden is a strained relationship with my mother, filled with misunderstandings and emotional hurdles that amplify the exhaustion. Yet, in the midst of these trials, I hold onto a profound truth: these are temporary ailments. The Bible reminds us in Romans 8:28 that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” This promise fuels my determination to press on, transforming suffering into a catalyst for growth.

First, let’s acknowledge the reality—these challenges feel overwhelming. The constant ache from chemotherapy and treatments makes simple tasks like walking or hugging loved ones feel like mountains. Meanwhile, family dynamics, especially with a parent, can stir up old wounds, making vulnerability risky. But I’ve realized that pushing forward doesn’t mean ignoring these struggles; it means viewing them through the lens of eternity. Cancer may ravage my body now, but it’s not the end of my story. Relational tensions might sting, but they too can fade with time and intentional effort. By anchoring in faith, I remind myself that God’s timeline is perfect, and what feels endless is merely a season.

Navigating these times without compromising personal boundaries is crucial for preserving mental and emotional health. Boundaries aren’t walls of isolation; they’re guardrails for self-care. Start by communicating clearly and kindly—I’ve learned to say, “I appreciate your concern, but I need space to process this alone right now.” This honors my needs while inviting understanding. Set limits on conversations that drain energy; for instance, redirect talks about my illness to positive topics or schedule short visits to avoid overload. Involve a mediator, like a counselor or pastor, if direct dialogue escalates. Remember, protecting your peace isn’t selfish—it’s stewardship of the body and spirit God entrusted to you. During painful flare-ups, prioritize rest without guilt, perhaps by delegating tasks or leaning on a support network. These steps ensure you’re not eroded by external pressures, allowing room for healing.

Even in hardship, personal and spiritual growth thrives when pursued deliberately. Pain has deepened my empathy, teaching me to listen more intently to others’ stories. Spiritually, I’ve committed to daily devotionals, even on bedridden days—short podcasts or audio Bibles keep my mind fixed on truth. Journaling gratitudes shifts my focus from suffering to blessings, fostering resilience. Though I once journaled regularly, I’ve struggled to maintain it lately and miss its benefits. I’m working to reincorporate it into my daily routine. This blog fulfills some of journaling’s emotional and spiritual needs, but not all, so I strongly encourage others to journal. Physically, gentle yoga or walks, when possible, build strength without overexertion. Relationally, I’ve sought forgiveness and reconciliation where feasible, but without forcing it, allowing God to mend what’s broken. Joining online faith communities provides encouragement, reminding me I’m not alone. Growth isn’t linear; it’s about small, consistent steps—like praying through pain or reading Scripture that affirms God’s sovereignty.

Pushing forward means trusting that today’s trials are forging tomorrow’s testimony. If you’re in the storm, know this: your pain has purpose. Lean on the Lord, guard your boundaries, and nurture your growth. The other side holds victory—not because we’re strong, but because He is. Keep moving; the light is coming.

Three Bible verses to reflect on:

1.  Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
This verse speaks directly to the assurance of God’s presence and guidance through difficult times, encouraging courage and resilience despite pain or relational challenges.

2.  Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
This verse highlights the renewal of strength through hope in God, aligning with the blog’s focus on perseverance and spiritual growth amid physical and emotional struggles.

3.  2 Corinthians 4:16-17 (NIV)
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”
This passage connects to the idea of temporary ailments and the eternal perspective, emphasizing inner renewal and the purpose behind suffering for those who love God.
