The Power of Giving: Why Living for Others Transforms Your Life

3–5 minutes

In a world that often celebrates self-interest, it’s easy to fall into the trap of living solely for yourself. We’re told to chase personal success, to prioritize our own desires, and to build lives that revolve around “me.” But what happens when “me” becomes the only focus? I’ve learned, through my own journey, that living only for yourself can leave you feeling disconnected, resentful, and even entitled. In contrast, giving to others—sacrificing a piece of yourself for the greater good—creates a profound sense of connection, self-awareness, and fulfillment that nothing else can match.

When you live only for yourself, something shifts in your heart. It’s subtle at first—a growing sense of isolation, a nagging feeling that the world owes you something. I’ve seen it in others, and I’ve felt it creep into my own life during moments of self-absorption. That mindset breeds anger, resentment, and a disconnection from the vibrant, messy, beautiful reality of the world around us. It’s as if you’re living in a bubble, cut off from the people and experiences that give life meaning. You might achieve personal goals, but without a sense of purpose tied to others, those victories feel hollow.

On the other hand, living to enrich others changes everything. When you give—whether it’s your time, your resources, or simply your kindness—you step outside yourself and into a larger story. You become part of something bigger. For me, this realization came through my own struggles as a single mom facing stage 4 cancer. I don’t have much in terms of material wealth, but I’ve found that even the smallest acts of reaching out to others can create ripples of connection and purpose. Every day, I try to do something—whether it’s a kind word, a helpful post on my website, or a moment of listening to someone who needs it. These acts don’t just help others; they ground me in reality and remind me that I’m not alone.

Through my website, I’m working toward a bigger dream: raising money to support other single moms battling stage 4 cancer. This mission isn’t just about funds; it’s about showing these women they’re seen, valued, and not alone in their fight. Every person I reach, every story I share, fills me with a sense of fulfillment that no personal achievement could ever match. It’s not about how much I have to give; it’s about the act of giving itself. The more I pour into others, the more connected I feel—not just to them, but to the world and to my own purpose.

Giving doesn’t have to be grand. It can be as simple as a smile, a note of encouragement, or sharing your story to inspire someone else. These small sacrifices weave a tapestry of connection that binds us to one another. They remind us that we’re all part of the same human family, navigating the same joys and struggles. When you live for others, you gain a self-awareness that’s rooted in humility and gratitude. You see the world as it is—imperfect, challenging, but full of opportunities to make a difference.

So, I challenge you: find one way to give today. Reach out to someone who needs it. Share a piece of your heart, your time, or your story. You’ll find that in giving, you receive something far greater—a sense of connectedness, purpose, and joy. For me, every step toward helping other single moms with cancer brings me closer to a life that feels whole. Join me in living for others, and discover the transformative power of sacrifice.

Three Bible verses to reflect on:

1.  John 15:13 (NIV):
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
This verse highlights the ultimate act of sacrifice—giving up something dear for the sake of others. It reflects the profound love and connection that come from prioritizing others’ needs, resonating with your mission to support single moms with cancer.

2.  Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV):
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
This passage directly addresses the pitfalls of self-centeredness and encourages humility and care for others, mirroring the fulfillment you find in reaching out through your website.

3.  Galatians 6:2 (NIV):
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
This verse emphasizes the importance of supporting others in their struggles, fostering a sense of community and purpose, which connects to your daily efforts to give and your goal of raising funds for others.
